Developing your style....

Letterpress_Designer copyHere's a little tip on how to determine what your style is. It can be applied to anything. Graphic design, interior design, landscape design, clothing design, buying clothes, finding mods for your truck, photography, whatever you want.

Step 1: Find yourself a 3-ring binder (at least two inches) and some of those plastic sheet protectors.

Step 2: Scour your place for some of your favorite magazines or pick some up at your local grocery or book store.

Step 3: Go through each magazine and cut out everything that you like and place it in those sheet protectors. Doesn't matter what it is, just everything that strikes your interest. Do this with as many magazines as possible, you want that binder full.

Step 4: Once you've filled your binder, go back through and edit. Take out everything that you don't 100% love. Don't categorize or anything, just go through and take out what your not sure of.

Step 5: After you finish editing, go back through with a detailed eye and look at what color palette you picked the most, look at the shapes and textures, look at the materials used, look at the creator of the product (do they show up multiple times?), etc...

Step 6: Write down all the things you discovered going through your style guide. This is your style. This is what you love and should use as a guide for whatever it is that you're doing.

It's an easy, fun thing to do and can be done annually, seasonally or for every project and helps you to cut through the clutter and focus on what your true style is.
